New Farakka Express Derailment: Railways suspend two officials after initial probe indicates wrong signal given to train

New Delhi:

The railways has suspended two officials on Thursday after an initial investigation had indicated that a wrong signal had been given to the New Farakka Express that derailed near Rae Bareli on Wednesday morning and claimed nine lives.

At least 27 people sustained serious injuries after six coaches, including the engine of the New Delhi-Malda New Farakka Express, derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli. Of the seven dead, at least two were children. All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. NDRF teams from Lucknow and Varanasi reached the spot to carry out the rescue operation.

According to the reports, the incident took place 50 meters from the Harchandpur railway station after the train was diverted on a wrong track. 

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had taken stock of the situation and directed the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, health authorities and NDRF teams to provide all the possible help.

An ex-gratia of Rs 2 Lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 compensation for those with serious injuries were also announced.
