1. Tuticorin violence: Death toll rises to 13; Stalin demands CM Palaniswami's resignation
The ongoing violence in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, who had demanded the closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper unit. Over 70 people have been injured while clashing with the security personnel. They are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) working president MK Stalin sat on a protest outside Tamil Nadu secretariat and demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister K Palaniswami and DGP Rajendran over the killings.
2. Nipah: Kerala death toll rises to 11; fear of virus spread in Karnataka
The deadly Nipah virus on Thursday claimed one more life in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, taking the death toll to 11 so far. The deceased, V Moosa, 61, was battling for life in a private hospital in Kozhikode after he contracted the virus a few days back, district medical officer, Dr Jayasree E told reporters.
Meanwhile, the fear of Nipah virus has crossed the border from Kerala to Karnataka with two people suspected to be infected by the deadly virus, Karnataka health officials said. The symptoms of Nipah virus were found in a 20-year-old woman and 75-year-old man in Karnataka’s Mangalore. They were reportedly in contact with infected patients in Kerala
3. Petrol price touches new high; Rs 85.29 in Mumbai, Rs 77.47 in Delhi
The prices of petrol and diesel continued to skyrocket on the 11th straight day and touched an all-time high on Thursday. In Mumbai, the petrol was being sold at Rs 85.29 per litre, while in Delhi the price rose to a new record of Rs 77.47 per litre. The diesel also breached all records and touched a new high of Rs 72.96 per litre in Mumbai and Rs 68.53 in the national capital.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that the rise in the fuel prices was “unavoidable” and subsidising petrol and diesel will take away the money from social welfare schemes.
4. North Korea demolishes nuclear test site Trump-Kim summit
North Korea on Thursday dismantled its Punggye-ri nuclear test site in presence of foreign journalists. The decision came ahead of the historic meet between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore.
North Korea’s decision to close the site has been touted as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone and a healthy atmosphere ahead of the summit.
5. Virat Kohli injured, set to miss County stint with Surrey
Indian skipper Virat Kohli will not play for English County team Surrey in June due to a neck injury that he suffered while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). "Virat Kohli will not play for Surrey after suffering a neck injury playing for RCB. He will undertake a fitness Test on 15th June, and is expected to be fit for India's tours of Ireland and England," ICC tweeted on Thursday.
