New Delhi:

Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that “killing people in the name of ‘gau bhakti’ is not acceptable,” a man was lynched to death in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district for allegedly carrying beef in his van.

Alimuddin alias Asgar Ansari was carrying “banned meat” in a van, news agency IANS quoted police sources as saying.

Alimuddin was stopped by a group of people near Bajartand village, beat him black and blue and set his van on fire.

However, Police reached the spot and lathi charged to disperse the mob. Alimuddin was later taken to hospital but during the treatment, he succumbed to the injuries.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi, who is on a two-day Gujrat visit said “Killing people in the name of gau bhakti is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve of.”

“Let’s all work together. Let’s create the India of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams. Let’s create an India our freedom fighters would be proud of,” the prime minister said.

“No person in this nation has the right to take the law in his or her own hands,” he added.

On Wednesday, thousands of people across the country had taken to the streets in a citizens’ protest named ‘Not in My Name’ against the recent incidents of mob killings.

Holding placards that read: “Break the Silence”, “No Place for Islamophobia” and “Shed Hate not Blood” among others, the protesters had said they had gathered to send out a message that there is a need to unite for a cause.
