The suicide by a senior executive of Genpact India in Noida on Tuesday raises a pertinent question of whether the #Metoo campaign has gone too far. As much as it helped victims raise their voices against sexual predators, somewhere down the line, people who weren't actually culprits were also named in a revenge plot, in some cases. Whether 35-year-old Swaroop Raj was guilty of sexual harassment or not is for the law to decide but the suspension order against him certainly made him so weak that he took this extreme step of leaving his wife and family to suffer. The senior executive allegedly killed himself after being suspended from his job over sexual harassment allegations. In the purported suicide note addressed to his wife, he said that all the allegations were untrue.
Here’s the suicide note written by Swaroop Raj, senior vice president of Genpact India, addressed to his wife:
Today I want to let you know how much I love you. I have an allegation by 2 of the employees on sexual harassment and trust me I did not do anything. I know the world will understand it but you and our families should trust me. The allegations are baseless. But the entire Genpact will know about it, hence I don’t have the courage to face anyone.
I want you to be strong and live your life with whole respect as your husband has not done anything.
I am going as everyone will look at me with that eye even if I come clean.
Swaroop Raj belonged to Gurugram and lived in a Noida highrise apartment in Sector 137 with his wife. They had been married for two years. Two female employees from Genpact had accused him of sexual harassment on December 12 and the company had suspended him on December 18 till the investigations in the case were complete. WATCH VIDEO
According to police, allegations against the man were being investigated by an internal complaints committee, and he had been suspended for the duration. They are investigating everything from the suspension letter to the suicide note. The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination A spokesperson for Genpact confirmed that executive was on suspension. “It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the news of an employee’s untimely death. Our heart goes out to his family at this tragic time. We had received a complaint against him and had put him on temporary suspension pending the outcome of the investigation,” a spokesperson said. The police said that they have not received any complaint from the victim’s family.
