North Kashmir SP transferred following lynching outside Jamia Masjid

The Superintendent of Police for North Srinagar, Sajad Khaliq Bhat, was transferred following the recent lynching of Deputy SP Mohammed Ayub Pandith.

Deputy SP Mohammed Ayub Pandith was lynched to death by a mob outside the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar on Thursday. Pandith was on duty outside the Mosque wearing a civil dress and reportedly clicking pictures of people coming out of the Mosque.

But it didn’t go down well with the mob and they confronted Pandith. This led to him taking out his weapon and fire in self-defence.

Another official with Pundith fled from the spot while some youth from the mob snatched his weapon and started beating him which resulted in his death.

The horrific incident was strongly condemned by Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti and former CM Omar Abdullah. Mehbooba terming the incident as ‘shamefull’ said J&K Police uses a lot of restraint in dealing with its own people.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also strongly condemned the attackers, saying they should 'burn in hell.'

"His (Pandith's) death is a tragedy & the manner of his death a travesty. May the people who lynched DySP Pandith burn in hell for their sins", Abdullah said in a Twitter post.
