New Delhi:

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the Narendra Modi government over the rising incidents of crime against women in India, saying that there is no 'Make in India' but 'Rape in India'. Addressing an election rally in Jharkhand’s Godda, Rahul Gandhi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained silent when one of his party's MLA 'raped' a woman in Uttar Pradesh.

"Narendra Modi had said 'Make in India' but nowadays wherever you look, it is 'Rape in India'. In Uttar Pradesh Narendra Modi's MLA raped a woman, then she met with an accident but Narendra Modi did not utter a word," the Congress leader said.

Following the Gandhi’s blistering attack, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a counteroffensive against him and demanded an apology for "giving a clarion call that Indian women should be raped."

"This is first time in history that a leader is giving a clarion call that Indian women should be raped. Is this Rahul Gandhi's message to the people of the country?" Union Minister Smriti Irani said in the Lok Sabha.

BJP MPs in Rajya Sabha also raised slogans of 'Rahul Gandhi maafi maango' over his remarks. Both the houses of Parliament were adjourned till 12 noon after ruckus by the BJP MPs over Gandhi’s alleged anti-women remark.

Defending Rahul Gandhi's remark, DMK MP Kanimozhi said that what he intended was to show the rising incidents of rape and crime against women. "PM said 'Make in India', which we respect, but what is happening in country? That is what Rahul Gandhi intended to say. Unfortunately Make in India is not happening&women in the country are being raped. This is a concern," she said.
