New Delhi:

Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) leaders on Wednesday midnight put a shoe garland on the statue of Veer Savarkar at the North campus of Delhi University. This came after RSS affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had installed Savarkar’s statue without administration permission. According to reports, around 20 NSUI student shouting Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose slogans defaced the statue.

ABVP-led Delhi University Students' Union President Shakti Singh said that they repeatedly approached the administration for permission to install the statue but got no response from them.

"We wrote a couple of letters to the varsity administration. We even met the Vice Chancellor in March. But when we noticed that the students' union is not being taken seriously, we had to helplessly install the statues in the hope that the youth would be inspired by them," India Today quoted Shakti as saying.

Earlier, NSUI and ABVP hit out at the principal of Delhi University's Vivekananda College for issuing a notice asking students not to attend any political rallies.

According to the notice apparently issued by Principal Hina Nandrajog, "All the students are advised not to attend any political rally otherwise the disciplinary action will be taken against them by the college."

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad demanded that the notice be withdrawn.

"The college administration should withdraw this anti-student decision soon. Is it not our right to fight for our demands?" they said.

The National Students' Union of India said, "Issuing such type of notice clearly displays the intention behind it. The college has been always seen as hub of BJP and right-wing political activities."

Recently, the college administration also permitted to set up a BJP membership drive camp outside the campus, they claimed.

"NSUI strongly condemns such autocratic orders. These are aimed at not only curbing the freedom of students but also threatening them.
