Two women drowned in Nagabali river at Odisha’s Rayagada district while taking selfies, police said.
Police have identified the deceased as E Jyoti, 27 from Vishakapatnam and S Sridevi, 23, from Vizianagaram.
According to police the two drowned were accompanied by seven other tourists, who also hail from neighbouring state Andhra Pradesh.
The other tourists, who had accompanied the victims, told the police that first they took selfies from the suspension bridge built over River Nagabali on the outskirts of Rayagada town.
Later the duo killed went into the waters to take more photos, informed Rayagada police station officer-in-charge to the media.
The two were posing on a rock in the river, when one of the victims accidentally slipped into the flowing water. The other in an attempt to save the woman who had slipped fell in water too. The bodies of the duo were fished out by local fishermen.
According to a research, India has had the highest number of selfie-related deaths. The study suggests that at least 60 percent of cases of people being killed while trying to take a picture of themselves have been reported in India.
