1977 batch IAS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre Om Prakash Rawat has been appointed as the 22nd Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by President Ram Nath Kovind on the recommendation of the Central Government.

Rawat will take over from CEC Achal Kumar Joti whose term ends on Monday.

Rawat will assume office on Tuesday, according to a notice issued by the Law Ministry on Sunday and will serve office as CEC until November 2019.

Ashok Lavasa, a 1980-batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre and former Finance Secretary has been appointed as the first Election Commissioner.

Sunil Arora would be the second Election Commissioner along with Lawasa.
