New Delhi :
After Supreme Court upheld Karnataka High court’s decision and convicted AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala in the 20-year-old Disproportionate Assets (DA) case and sentenced her to 4 years in jail, O Panneerselvam’s path on the way to becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu again seems smooth now.
Fortune have turned its way to the current caretaker CM Panneerselvam who seems favourite to take back the power reigns in the state since the inception of the series of events in the current political turmoil in Tamil Nadu.
A state of virtual political uncertainty erupted in the state when the incumbent CM Panneerselvam resigned from the office to make way for Sasikala, who after taking over the power in the party was pitched to run the government as well.
But things didn’t go well as they were expected. Soon after Governor accepted Panneerselvam’s resignation, he turned rebel against the party and revolted against Sasikala when he said that he was forced to resign.
Since that moment, the AIADMK party fell apart and two factions were created in the party. While the majority of MLAs were believed to be supporting Sasikala, OPS gained valuable support from the senior cadre of the party.
In the last couple, the tussle of power between OPS and Chinnamma grew deep with party leaders and MP, MLAs were seen switching sides from Sasikala’s camp to take Panneerselvam side.
Both the leaders also met Governor Vidyasagar Rao and with no official reply coming from him, it was expected that he was looking forward to SC verdict in the case.
Now with the SC’s verdict the cloud of uncertainty soon might clear and Governor can soon take a call to either initiate floor-test in the assembly or ask OPS to prove majority.
