PM Modi launches BJP's countrywide membership drive in Varanasi, decodes Budget 2019

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived at his parliamentary constituency Varanasi to launch the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s countrywide membership drive. Upon his arrival at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Modi was welcomed by BJP working president JP Nadda, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state party chief Mahendra Nath Pandey. Later, Modi unveiled a statue of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in the presence of senior Congress leader and Lal Bahadur's son Anil Shastri at the local airport. From 11:30 onwards, Modi is scheduled to address around 5,000 party workers at Deendayal Upadhyaya Trade Facilitation Centre in Bada Lalpur following the launch of BJP's much-awaited membership drive. A tree-plantation campaign, "Anand Kanan" was also in schedule of PM Modi's day long visit to Varanasi, the temple city in Uttar Pradesh.

#01:08 pm: By the year 2022, every poor people will get a roof over their head. To achieve this target, 2 crore more houses will be built in villages across India.

#01:06 pm: Our government has given pucca houses to over 1 crore poor people in the last five years. If it was the previous government in power, people would have to wait for another generation for those houses.

#12:54 pm: Be it the promise of cooking gas, or pucca houses or electricity, the BJP government has fulfilled all the promises made to people.

#12:47 pm: We can together give befitting reply to ‘professional pessimist’, who think the goal of making India a $5 trillion economy is unachievable: PM Modi in Varanasi.

#12:45 pm: Yoga is boosting tourism in India: The practice of yoga in our country not only ensures good health of people but is also giving a significant boost to health tourism, the prime minister says.

#12:41 pm: Water for every household is our dream: Be it for cooking, cleaning or for use in toilets, water is required everywhere. To look after the water deficit 'Har Ghar ko Jal', a special Jal Shakti ministry has been dedicated to the nation. Micro-irrigation and drip-irrigation is very significant to make it successful, says PM Modi.

#12:35 pm: Union Budget 2019 indicates BJP's 10-year-vision and 5-year-target mantra. Rs 100 lakh crore will be invested in railways, airways, highway constructions, digital infrastructures and in villages during the next five years. It is government's roadmap towards USD 5 trillion economy. 

#12:32 pm: Despite tough times in the past, India kept moving forward. This time too, we shall move ahead and achieve this target of USD 5 trillion economy.

#12:30 pm: Referring to a English saying - "size of the cake matters", PM Modi said the bigger the economy the more the people will be benefited.

#12:29 pm: You should known about the USD 5 trillion economy because New India is eager to run faster.

#12:27 pm: PM Modi explains meaning of USD 5 trillion economy to BJP workers: It is essential for all of you to understand what is meant by USD 5 trillion economy, not only because you need to explain it to people but also to give it back to those who think India cannot achieve this goal.

#12:25 pm: PM Modi pays homage to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjeeji: It is a coincidence that this building is in the name of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaji and the launch of the membership drive is being started from Kashi on the birth anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjeeji.

#12:23 pm: It was my honour to unveil a statue of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur's Shastri at Varanasi Airport today, the prime minister says.

#10:46 am: PM Narendra Modi arrives in Varanasi to launch BJP's membership drive. He was welcomed upon arrival by BJP Working President JP Nadda, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and party's UP Chief MN Pandey.

What is BJP membersgip drive?

Under the BJP's membership drive, anyone can become a member of the party by giving a missed call on a mobile number or by filing a form. Initially, the party aims to add at least 20 per cent more workers in its current strength through this drive, which will conclude on August 11. Following today's launch, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will participate in the BJP's membership drive programme in Jaipur, BJP chief and Home Minister Amit Shah in Hyderabad and Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur.

It was Modi's second visit to the constituency after winning the Lok Sabha elections. PM Modi had visited his constituency on May 27 to thank people for keeping faith in his government.
