Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches the AIADMK led-Tamil Nadu government’s scheme for women to buy two wheelers at 50 per cent subsidy in Chennai’s Kalaivanar Arangam on Saturday.
The subsidy scheme has been christened ‘Amma Two-wheeler Scheme’. The launching of the scheme coincides with former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa birth anniversary. She died on December 6, 2016 after massive cardiac arrest during her treatment at Apollo Hospital.
Jayalalithaa was popularly known as Amma and the scheme has been named in her remembrance.
The former chief minister had promised 50 per cent subsidy on scooters for working ladies in the state during the run-up to the 2016 assembly elections.
“I am glad to launch one of her’s (Jayalalithaa) dream projects– the Amma Two Wheeler Scheme. These initiatives will go a long way in empowering women,” ” said PM Modi.

He added, “On empowering women, we empower the entire family. On securing a girl’s future, we secure the future of the entire home.”
