PM Modi Broke News To Bipin Rawat About His Appointment As Chief of Defence Staff

Making his appointment more memorable, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who broke the news to General Bipin Rawat about his elevation as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). During General Rawat’s farewell dinner at Prime Minister’s residence, PM Modi broke the news to him.

Earlier, General Bipin Rawat was officially named as India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). General Bipin Rawat’s tenure will start with effect from 31st December until further orders and extension in his service.

The announcement has been made months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the creation of the post of CDS in his Independence Day speech on August 15 last year. General Rawat becomes India’s first CDS and will have his office in South Block ground floor while 3, Kamraj Marg in the Lutyens zone near Defence Ministry has been earmarked as his house.

Moreover, in his new role, General Rawat will be donning a different uniform uniting elements from all the three wings of the armed forces. His uniform colour remain be olive green denoting his parent service. However, the ranks and badges of the CDS uniform will be different.

The new CDS will serve till the age of 65. According to the existing government rules, the service chiefs can serve up to the age of 62 or for three years, whichever is earlier.
