Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation for the fourth time from the Red Fort on the occasion of 71st Independence Day. He spoke on various issues such as demonetisation, terrorism, a strong, vibrant India among other factors.
He hailed the women fighting the practice of 'triple talaq' and said the entire country is with them in their endeavour to achieve their rights. "I pay my regards to the women who had to lead a pitiable life due to 'triple talaq' and have started a movement which has created an environment in the entire country against the practice," Modi said here in his Independence Day address.
Triple Talaq had been a major poll issue of BJP before the UP assembly elections 2017. BJP leaders have consistently pointed out that various secular leaders have been silent on the issue and ignore the sufferings of Muslim women.
The Centre has said that it is against the practice of triple talaq. The matter is being adjudicated by a constitution bench of the Supreme Court.
