Congress on Saturday slammed Narendra Modi-led BJP government over increasing farm distress in the country. Taking a swipe at the Prime Minister, Congress said that the Modi government replaced farmer's Swaminathan Committee with 'Jumlanathan Committee'.
“The biggest betrayal anyone has ever done to the farmers of the country is the present Modi government. It has scrapped farmers’ Swaminathan Committee and replaced it with 'Jumlanathan Committee',” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said while speaking at the 84th Congress party plenary session.
“Doesn't the market distort when Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya and Jatin Mehta flee out of the country and does it only distort when farmers ask for Minimum Support Price,” Surjewala asked.
The 84th Indian National Congress Plenary Session began on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, with the main focus on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier in the day, Congress President Rahul Gandhi reminding PM Modi of his 2014 promise asked to reveal when he will increase the Minimum Support Price for crops.
“Modiji, forgetting the glare of government’s PR, in your today’s speech at the ‘Krishi Unnati Mela’, tell the farmers of the country that when will you increase the support price, so that the benefits of the farmers can be increased by 50 per cent and thousands of farmers will not have to commit suicide? This is what you promised in 2014. Do you remember? #BasEkAurSaal,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
During his rallies in the run-up of 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi had promised that if elected to power he will ensure remunerative prices to the farmers by adding 50 per cent profit into the peasants’ input cost."
