New Delhi:

After months of tumult over the assassination plot of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a “Rajiv Gandhi-type" incident, the Delhi police on Saturday gave another edge to the controversy. If latest media reports turn out to be true, Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik has received an e-mail that threatens to kill PM Modi on the lines of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The one-line mail has claimed to assassinate Modi during one of his roadshows in November 2019. Primary investigation suggests that the server which was used to generate the mail has been traced to Northeast - in and around Assam.

In the view of this assassination threat, safety and security agencies have been put on high alert, especially at those places where PM Modi will be addressing rallies ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana.

However, the investigation to nab the culprit has been initiated soon after senior cop Patnaik received the mail.

Earlier in June, Pune police in a coordinated raid across India arrested five persons for their alleged Maoist activities in Bhima-Koregaon violence. During the investigation, the cops found a letter from the residence of Delhi-based rights activist Rona Wilson where ultras mentioned a plot to assassinate PM Modi in a "Rajiv Gandhi-type incident". Wilson is one of the five activists arrested in connection with the Elgar-Parishad matter, that rocked Maharashtra’s Bhima-Koreagon village on January 1, 2018.
