Women power in Indian judiciary! Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras high courts get female chief justices

With the appointment of Justice Indira Banerjee as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on April 5, four high courts in India are now headed by women.

Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta high courts are already being led by women chief justices.

Justice Rohini is the chief justice of Delhi High Court, Justice Manjula Chellur that of Bombay High Court. Justice Nishita Nirmal Mhatre is the Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High court.

Even though this seems to denote that representation of women in Judiciary is improving the situation in the apex court is not as good as it has only one women judge.

Also, this progress may be short lived since Chief Justice Rohini will be retiring in two days. 

Earlier, Indira Banerjee (59) served as a judge in the Delhi High Court and her appointment came following the elevation of former Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, to the Supreme Court in February.
