President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the newly constructed annexe building of the Supreme Court on Wednesday.  The inauguration will take place in the presence of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and other judges of the Supreme Court. The foundation stone of the complex was laid in the year 2012. To cope up the space constraints, the complex is constructed in way that it embodies contemporary technology.  In total, the building will have five functional blocks and one service block. The blocks are four to nine storeys high with a three-level basement and car packing capacity of almost 1800 units.

As per an official note, “It has strong architectural and design similarities with the existing Supreme Court which was built more than 60 years ago…the curvature of the building, makes it look in every way, a modern-day manifestation of the original…”

The new state-of-the-art building has been made energy-efficient as it has been designed as ‘Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment’ (GRIHA).  Its rooftop will have the maximum solar power capacity i.e. 1400 kWp more than any other building in the national capital region. 40 percent of the peak consumption is expected to be met by the solar capacity itself.

The newly constructed block also consists of two auditoriums with seating capacities of 620 and 250 persons. The building spread in an area of 1,80,700 square metres also has a conference room.

The basements in the new building are connected to the old complex by three weather underground passages.

The structure of Supreme Court as a whole symbolizes scale of justice while the central wing houses the chief justice’s court. The foundation stone of the Supreme Court was laid on October 29, 1954 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.
