President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday visited the Siachen base camp in Jammu and Kashmir and interacted with soldiers posted at the world’s highest battlefield.

During the visit, the president was accompanied by the Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat and Lt Gen D Anbu, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Northern Command.

After arriving at the base camp, President Kovind laid a wreath at the Siachen War Memorial in memory of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service of the country.

“There was a special reason behind my excitement to meet you. I wanted to personally convey you the message that there is special respect in heart of all Indians for the soldiers and officers guarding the borders,” President Kovind told soldiers.

Kovind became only the second president to visit the Siachen base camp after the then president APJ Abdul Kalam, who visited the site in 2004.
