CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday announced that Gopal Krishna Gandhi, who has been former West Bengal Governor, would be their party's first choice candidate for the upcoming Presidential Polls. He added that if the party doesn't draw a consensus on Gandhi's candidature then Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr. BR Ambedkar would be the party's second choice.
Yechury had a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi on June 14 to discuss the strategy to unite the opposition for their candidature against the ruling party BJP in the presidential polls which will be held on July 17.
Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah announced the name of Ramnath Kovind as the NDA nominee for the post of country’s President.
