Pulwama attack: From Rahul to Mamata and Mufti to Omar, politicians condemn cowardly act

Leaders across the political spectrum have condemned the terror attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama on Thursday in which at least 40 jawans were martyred and several others are reportedly injured. From Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah and Rahul Gandhi to Mamata Banerjee, they all have expressed shock over the attack.

“Disturbing news coming in from Awantipura. Twelve of our security personnel have been martyred and several have been injured. No words are enough to condemn the gruesome terror attack. How many more lives will be snuffed out before this madness ends?,” People's Democratic Party chief and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended condolences to the families of the CRPF soldiers who were martyred in the attack. "Saddened that 13 CRPF jawans became martyrs today in Pulwama. We salute our brave jawans and extend our solidarity and condolences to their families. Our prayers for those injured. We wish them a speedy recovery," she tweeted.

The CRPF personnel were killed when a terrorist rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the bus they were travelling in. According to reports, terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed the responsibility of the attack. The terrorist who was driving the explosive-laden vehicle has been identified as Aadil Ahmad alias Waqas Commando from Kakapora of Gundi Bagh, Pulwama.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for External Affairs General VK Singh said that they will avenge the attack. "As a soldier and a citizen of India, my blood boils at the spineless and cowardly attacks. 18 brave hearts from the @crpfindia laid down their lives in #Pulwama. I salute their selfless sacrifice & promise that every drop of our soldier’s blood will be avenged, (sic)," VK Singh said.

"I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. My prayers for the injured & condolences to the families of the bereaved," National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted.

"We strongly condemn this cowardly attack, we extend condolences to the kin of the jawans who were martyred. This is the 18th big terror attack in the last 5 years under this Modi Govt. When will the 56-inch chest reply?" Randeep Surjewala said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi said he is deeply disturbed by the cowardly attack on CRPF jawans.

"I’m deeply disturbed by the cowardly attack on a #CRPF convoy in J&K in which 10 of our brave men have been martyred and many others wounded. My condolences to the families of our martyrs. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," he tweeted.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned that attack and India must stand united in this moment of grief.

"Extremely shocking news coming from Pulwama (J&K). I strongly condemn the terror attack on CRPF convoy in which many casualties are feared. India must stand united in this moment of grief," Kejriwal tweeted.
