Rain batters Gujarat, cloudburst in Uttarakhand, landslide hits Himachal

Inclement weather wreaked havoc in several states across the country on Monday. While Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh were badly hit by the incidents of cloudburst and heavy landslide, incessant rains continued to disrupt normal life in Gujarat and Mumbai.

In Gujarat, several low-lying areas inundated after heavy downpour for the last few days. While water entered some houses in Navsari, roads in the state turned to rivers, throwing normal life out of gear.

Cloudburst in Uttarakhand

Nearly a dozen houses, ten shops and several vehicles were swept in Tharali and Ghat areas of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district following a cloudburst, District Disaster Management Centre said.

“Relief and rescue teams rushed to the affected area. So far, there were no reports of any causality,” PTI quoted Chamoli District Magistrate Ashish Joshi as saying.

There were also reports of seven houses being washed away in Maukh Malla village of Serabagad area of Chamoli.

Landslides, caused by heavy rains also hit Dhurma-Kundi village in Ghat area of the district. Muck and rubble swept away five cowsheds and as many houses. The Badrinath Highway at Lambagad, Pipalkoti and Gauchar was also blocked for some time due to heavy rains.

Landslide in Himachal Pradesh

Heavy rains caused landslide in Bagipul-Jao road area in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. While there were no reports of injury due to the incident, two vehicles were damaged after being hit in the landslide.

High tide spills garbage in Mumbai

The Arabian Sea witnessed high tide of up to 4.85 metres on Sunday. Huge amounts of garbage spilled on the iconic coastal road of Mumbai’s Marine Drive.

A civic official said that work to clean up the area, visited by thousands of Mumbaikars every day, was taken up on a priority basis soon after.
