Rajasthan: Kanwariyas and locals clash as police impose curfew in Malpura town

Fresh violence was reported on Friday in Malpura area of Tonk district in Rajasthan, as local pelted stones at Kanwariyas, forcing the police to impose curfew in the area. An ‘unruly mob’ on Friday torched a shop in the town prompting the police to impose curfew in the area, Additional Superintendent of Police Goverdhan Sekaria said.

Earlier on Thursday, people of a minority community had pelted stones and attacked the kanwariyas while they were passing through a Muslim-dominated area in Malpura. The incident was followed by high tension in the area due to which the police imposed the Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), prohibiting the gathering of crowds. After hurling stones at the Kanwariyas, the crowd also torched a vehicle.

After imposing the Section 144 of CrPC, the mobile internet services were also blocked in the area.

Meanwhile, at least 15 pilgrims on Kanwar Yatra were injured severely in the clash and a video of the incident has gone viral.

In the incident, an SUV was vandalised and set ablaze alongside a state roadway bus.

An additional police force has been deployed in the area to maintain the law and order.
