Alwar mob lynching: Strictest possible action to be taken against perpetrators, says Vasundhara Raje

A 28-year-old man was beaten to death by a mob at Alwar in Rajasthan on Friday night on suspicion of cow smuggling. The deceased have been identified as Akbar Khan.

Ramgarh villagers caught the two men who were transporting cows on foot and were beaten up following which one of them died on the spot.

The police have launched an investigation and said it is not yet clarified whether the two men were cow smugglers or not.

"Akbar Khan, a resident of Kolgaon in Haryana, and another man were taking two cows to their village through a forest area near Lalawandi village in Alwar last night when a group of people severely thrashed Khan, said Subhash Sharma, the officer at Ramgarh police station.

"It is not clear if they were cow smugglers. The body has been sent for postmortem, We are trying to identify the culprits and arrests will be made soon," Anil Beniwal, a senior police officer in Alwar told news agency ANI.

Akbar Khan’s killing comes just four days after the Supreme Court had asked to consider enacting a new law to deal with mob violence.

Condemning the lynching, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje tweeted, "The incident of alleged lynching of a person transporting bovines in Alwar district is condemnable. Strictest possible action shall be taken against the perpetrators."

No one can take the law into their hands and the government must decide something fast, said the apex court on Tuesday.

"In case of fear and anarchy, the state has to act positively," said Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the mob violence but once more stated that that law and order is a state matter adding that he centre can only provide help if needed. 

Following the apex court’s statement, the home minister said there was no real need for a new law.
