A Kolkata court held one of the six accused as guilty in the Ranaghat nun rape case, while five persons have been convicted for robbery on Tuesday.

A 72-year-old nun in 2015 was raped by a group of suspected Bangladeshi nationals in a convent at Ranaghat in West Bengal’s Nadia district. The senior nun was raped in the Convent of Jesus and Mary on 14 March 2015 after a group of seven broke into the convent and later decamped with cash.

In May 2016 the trial was shifted from a court in Ranaghat to the Kolkata Sessions court by the Calcutta High Court on a petition by the victim. The nun shifted to Delhi after the incident, had sought transfer of the case to Kolkata stating she feared threat to her life as the accused had strong criminal links in Ranaghat.

The accused have been charged with and tried for gangrape, dacoity, attempt to cause death or grievous hurt, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means and criminal conspiracy.

The six accused, who were in judicial remand, are Ohidul Islam, Milan Kumar Sarkar, Nazrul Islam,  Mohd Selim Sheikh, Gopal Sarkar and Khaledar Rahman .

The West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) probing the case has arrested six people, while one of the accused is still absconding.

The accused were charged with attempt to gangrape, dacoity, grievous hurt and attempt to murder and causing hurt by dangerous weapons.
