The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has proposed the renaming of the historic Ramlila Maidan of Delhi after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. A final decision regarding the renaming of Ramlila Maidan is expected to be taken after a meeting of Municipal Corporation. Apart from the proposal, few BJP councilors have proposed the renaming of Hindu Rao Hospital after the three-time prime minister.

The renaming of both the Ramlila Maidan and the Hindu Rao Hospital is likely to be completed by December 25, the birth anniversary of Vajpayee, NDMC Mayor Aadesh Gupta said.

The iconic Ramlila Maidan has witnessed many historic events, including the day when the Indira Gandhi government announced the end of emergency in March 1977. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had then raised questions through his straight forward truth revealing poems during the gathering.

Meanwhile, the Jharkhand government has also decided to rename several places after Vajpayee, while Chattisgarh CM Raman Singh had announced to rename the new capital city – Naya Raipur- as Atal Nagar.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a three-time prime minister and a BJP veteran breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on August 16 at the age of 93.
