The Centre on Thursday announced the list of eminent personalities who will receive the 2018 Padma Awards of Republic Day. The prestigious awards include Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
Former Indian cricket India team captain MS Dhoni, noted music composer Illaiyaraja and Hindutava thinker Parameswaran Parameswaran were among 85 people chosen for the prestigious Padma awards of 2018.
The awardees include 16 are foreigners, non-resident Indians and three are posthumous.
The Padma Awards are given in various fields such as literature and education, art, sports, social work, medicine, science and engineering, civil service, public affairs, trade and industry.
This year more than 15,700 people had applied for the prestigious award. The PM Modi-led NDA government this year stressed on honouring the unsung heroes.
Few recommendations were made by state governments, Union territories, ministries and departments of the government of India, Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan awardees and Members of parliament.
