The girl students of Government High School in Rewari finally ended their hunger strike after the Haryana Government ordered upgradation of their school to level of Senior Secondary School.
Earlier on Wednesday, as the hunger strike by 95 girl students entered eighth day, the Haryana Government issued a notification for upgradation of the institute to a secondary school. However, the girl students had earlier refused to end the stir, demanding a written assurance from the Khattar Government.
The Class 9 and 10 girl students had alleged that they will face harassment if they travel to a senior secondary school located in a different village. On the eighth day of the protest, the families of the girls had joined them.
Talking to media, one of the protesting girls had said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the initiative of ‘beti bachao beti padhao’ but nothing is happening over here.”
“We fear harassment and molestation by youths of other villages and hence, we are demanding upgradation of our school up to Class XII,” one of the protesting students had said.
