Rishikesh’s iconic suspension bridge - Lakshman Jhula – constructed during the British-rule, has been closed down after 90 years after an expert panel suggested that the bridge was not safe anymore and beyond repair.
“We observed that several components of the bridge are in very bad condition. This bridge should not be permitted for pedestrian movement from now onwards. It is not in a position to sustain any more with the present condition,” News18 quoted Uttarakhand Additional Chief Secretary Om Prakash as saying.
The Uttarakhand Additional Chief Secretary warned of some big mishap if the bridge was not closed immediately. "It is highly recommended this bridge be closed with immediate effect, else some big mishap could take place,” he said.
According to a recent Public Works Department (PWD) study, the traffic and pedestrian movement on the bridge have increased over the last few years and its towers are leaning on one side.
The bridge, famously known as Lakshman Jhula is one of the major tourist attraction, is also used by two-wheelers along with the pedestrians. The bridge was named after Hindu mythological character Laxaman, brother of Lord Rama, as it is believed that it stands where he crossed the river with the help of ropes.
