Robert Vadra, son-in-law of interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, was admitted to Noida’s Metro Hospital after he complained of severe neck and back pain. He was admitted to the hospital on the medical advice. Though no official statement has been issued by the hospital authorities, sources say that senior orthopaedic surgeons are treating Vadra. Photos of his check-up at the facility also surfaced online. Wife Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached the hospital during night. After brief break, she was back at the Noida Sector-11 hospital and spent the night there only. Due to security concerns, the entire hospital has been put under the SPG cover.
Earlier in June, the businessman was allowed by a Delhi court to travel abroad for six weeks for treatment of an illness. The court had told Vadra to give his travel schedule and to return to India before the deadline. He has been allowed to go to the US and the Netherlands. At an prior instance, brother-in-law of Rahul Gandhi had skipped his appearance before the Enforcement Directorate citing bad health as the reason.
Last month, Enforcement Directorate had told the Delhi High Court that it wanted custodial interrogation of Robert Vadra because the "money chain" in a case of money laundering was allegedly directly linked to him. Vadra, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law, was not cooperating with the investigation in the case, the agency added before Justice Chandra Shekhar. Vadra is facing allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property -- at 12, Bryanston Square -- estimated at 1.9 million pounds (over Rs 17 crore). The case is being probed under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The ED case against Vadra relates to allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property at 12, Bryanston Square worth 1.9 million GBP (British pounds), which is allegedly owned by him. The agency had told a Delhi court that it has received information about various new properties in London which belong to Vadra. These include two houses--one worth 5 million GBP and the other valued at 4 million GBP, six other flats and more properties. The agency, meanwhile, appointed a new IO for the case as the incumbent Rajiv Sharma is set to be promoted.
