New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to allow a woman's plea to abort her 26-week old foetus suffering from 'down syndrome'.

The court took into record report of medical experts that there is no danger to the life of baby and mother if the pregnancy continued.

The Supreme Court had earlier gone against the law of the land and allowed an anonymous rape survivor to abort her 24-week-old foetus after she learnt that it suffered from Anencephaly, a congenital birth defect where the unborn would grow without a major portion of the brain and skull.

In a way, it overlooked the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act set in 1971 which currently allows abortion only till the 20th week.
