The Supreme Court on Friday stayed Uttarakhand High Court's order declaring rivers Ganga and Yamuna as ‘juristic persons’ and ‘living entities’.

The High Court on March 22 declared both the rivers as living entities, bestowing on them same legal rights as a person. The move was adopted so that it could help to clean the polluted rivers. After getting living entity status, complaints have been allowed to be filed against the two rivers.

Earlier, the High Court had issued a legal notice to river Ganga on April 28, seeking an explanation why her land was given for construction of a trenching ground. Apart from river Ganga, the notice was also sent to state govt and others in a case related to construction near banks of the river.
