A 28-year-old jilted lover set a woman ablaze in public view in Telangana’s Secunderabad after she rejected his marriage proposal, police said on Friday.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman, succumbed to her burn injuries on Friday morning. Police have arrested the accused.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north zone) B Sumathi said, “The accused has confessed his crime. On questioning the man told us that he set her on fire after she rejected his marriage proposal and he did not want her to accept anyone else.”

Sumathi also added that the accused also told the police that the victim rejected him saying that she was more beautiful and talented than him.

Another officer of Telangana Police said, “The victim succumbed to her injuries around 7:30 am while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad.”

Another senior police official said, “In our preliminary investigations we have learnt that a man, aged around 28, last evening called her to Lalaguda area. After a heated conversation, the man poured kerosene on her and set the girl ablaze.”

He added, “The woman was admitted to the hospital with more than 80 per cent burn injuries. A case under IPC section 307-attempt to murder was registered yesterday.”

A police official on Thursday had said that the man was in love with the woman and was regularly harassing her.
