Questioning the process to elect party president, Shehzad Poonawalla, Congress secretary of Maharashtra unit, on Wednesday dubbed it "rigged", saying that the elections are fixed.

While talking to ANI, Poonawalla said that the upcoming Congress president election is a selection and not an election. He said it is a sham election process.

The grand old party secretary said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi must first resign from his post. Poonawalla said he would also contest the election if it was conducted in a "genuine" manner.

“I think there should be only one ticket in one family, be it Shehzad Poonawalla or Rahul Gandhi,” he said.

Poonawalla further said: “I have information that the people who are going to vote for party president are fixed, it’s rigged.”

He said he took courage to speak out and would face criticism for it.

“Yes It takes courage to speak out, there will be all kinds of attacks against me, but I have facts,” Poonawalla said.
