Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been elected as the new DPCC (Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee) president. This came after Ajay Maken resigned from his post as the Delhi party chief. Reacting on the latest development, Ajay Maken took to Twitter and said “I congratulate Shiela Dikshit ji for being appointed the DPCC (Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee) President. I am confident that under her leadership, we will play the role of strong opposition to Modi & Kejriwal governments”.

Making the announcement, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of the party's Delhi unit, P C Chacko, said Dikshit would be assisted by three working presidents -- Devender Yadav, Haroon Yusuf and Rajesh Lilotia. Chacko said there were no talks within the Delhi unit about an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and that the party was fully prepared to contest the parliamentary election on its own.

After the appointment, Dikshit said that she is honoured that the party has given her this opportunity.

There were few reports earlier that had suggested that Sheila Dikshit be the front-runner for the post of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president after Ajay Maken resigned as the Delhi party chief.

On Thursday, Ajay Maken, along with AICC in-charge of Delhi affairs PC Chacko met Rahul Gandhi to submit his resignation letter. Ajay Maken, who has been suffering from "painful orthopedic ailment", is believed to have cited health reasons for his resignation.

80-year-old Dikshit has been a three-time chief minister of Delhi between 1998 to 2013.
