Ayodhya dispute: Shia board chief meets Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas chairman

New Delhi:

The chairman of Uttar Pradesh Shia Wakf Board on Friday met the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas chairman, Nritya Gopal Das to seek his cooperation in resolving the Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid dispute peacefully.

The Shia Central Waqf Board of UP had recently moved the top court offering a solution that a mosque could be built in a Muslim- dominated area at a "reasonable distance" from the disputed Ayodhya site.

“It was a very good meeting. I presented our proposal of constructing a mosque away from the disputed site and it was very well-received. Wherever during my meetings with the temple side I have spoken about it, people have been extremely receptive and have offered to help build the mosque. I will continue these meetings,” Syed Wasim Rizvi, Chairman, Shia Wakf Board said.

The Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas was formed by Hindu organisations to observe the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Nyas Chairman Nritya Gopal Das said “There was nothing special about the meeting. He offered his cooperation in the building of the temple. I said that would be exemplary and go a long way in promoting Hindu-Muslim relations.”

He, however, refused to have made an offer to help build a mosque.

The All India Sunni Waqf Board had opposed the intervention by Shia Wakf Board.

The board claimed that judicial adjudication between the two sects had already been done in 1946 by declaring the mosque, which was demolished on December 6, 1992, as one which belongs to the Sunnis.
