Shiv Sena lawmaker Vinayak Raut on Thursday compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lord Krishna, saying that he has proved himself to be a saviour who is guarding Muslim women from the menace of Triple Talaq. "Like Lord Krishna came to save Draupadi from Duryodhana and Dushasana, Muslim women have found a brother in Narendra Modi. He is intent on providing justice to them," the Sihv Sena MP said in the Lok Sabha.
The Triple Talaq Bill, which was passed by the Lower House on Thursday, was brought by the Modi government as it asserted that the law was required as hundreds of cases of instant divorce have come to the fore despite Supreme Court striking down the practice.
Raut, MP from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Lok Sabha constituency, also slammed previous governments for not doing anything to clamp down on the practice.
"Previous Congress governments did not dare to touch this subject because they cared more about their vote bank," he said.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 that prohibits divorce by pronouncing talaq thrice in one go was passed with 303 votes in favour and 82 against.
The clause in the bill which criminalises the practice with a jail term of upto three years for the husband was passed by a division of 302 in favour and 78 against.
The Bill will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha, where the opposition is numerically stronger than the ruling alliance.
This is not the first time when PM Modi has been compared with a God. Last year too, a Maharashtra BJP spokesperson described the prime minister as the ‘11th incarnation’ of Lord Vishnu.
“Hon PM @narendramodi ji is the 11th #Avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu (sic),” BJP leader Avadhut Wagh had said on Twitter.
