In one of the initial reactions over the violence that broke out in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Sunday, former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “Live TV is shocking and horrifying. Masked men enter JNU hostels and attack students.” Raising questions over police Chidambaram queried, “What is the Police doing? Where is the Police Commissioner?”
"If it is happening on live TV, it is an act of impunity and can only happen with the support of the government" added Chidambaram.
Earlier, violence broke out at Delhi’s JNU, as the head of its students’ union was attacked on campus. According to the sources, clashes erupted between members of JNU Students' Union and ABVP on university campus.
To quote Aishe Ghosh, the president of the students' union, "I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up".
The JNUSU said ,"ABVP members wearing masks were moving around on the campus with lathis, rods and hammers".
The ABVP, on the other hand, claimed that its members were brutally attacked by students affiliated to Left student organisations SFI, AISA and DSF.
However, JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) on Sunday released a statement after violent clashes broke out between the Left and ABVP students. In its release, the administration said that there is law and order situation in the JNU campus.
'Masked miscreants armed with sticks are roaming around, damaging property and attacking people. The JNU Adminstration has called the police to maintain order,' the release added.
