Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who was booked this year for an offensive tweet, was arrested in July, confirms Mumbai Police.
The singer had referred Senior Aam Aadmi Party member Preeti Sharma Menon as “ugly” and “picchly” in one of his tweets. Post which she had registered a FIR on July 14, 2016.
The Cyber Police booked him for defamation and outraging a woman’s modesty. It has been learnt that his son submitted a surety bond to release him from jail.
Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe said, “Abhijeet was arrested by the Cyber Police in mid-July, shortly after the FIR was registered. As the Sections invoked against him were bailable ones, he was granted bail on the spot.”
“Mumbai Police arrested Abhijeet on July 26, released him on bail later. Served him right,” Ms. Sharma Menon tweeted on Friday. She added that his cell phone had been seized and his offensive tweets had been deleted.
The police are waiting for the forensic report of the cell phone, after which a chargesheet will be filed against him, senior officials said.
