New Delhi :
Union human resource development minister Smriti Irani is BJP’s controversial child who is always in news for some or the other wrong reason.
Last week saw many ups and downs and confrontations in Parliament. It was always Smriti vs somebody. She was first defending herself over Rohith Vemula issue, then she breathed fire over the JNU and Kanhaiya Kumar row.
Her fierce speech in Parliament made shockwaves and promoted many to think on her lines.
Let us take a look at some controversies the minister and her ministry has been embroiled in ever since she took charge in 2014.
Rohith Vemula and JNU row
Smriti Irani has received backlash from opposition for her stand over the two rows in Parliament.
Many argued how could the country’s education portfolio be handed to a person who had not even gone to college but Irani claimed that she had completed a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the School of Open Learning, Delhi University thus suspending all debates.
The rollback of the Delhi University’s four-year university programme in 2014 invited mixed reaction from the academics and students. Many called her move dictatorial.
IIT-Delhi director’s resignation
The resignation of IIT-Delhi director RK Shevgaonkar from his position in December 2014 was attributed to the unnecessary intervention by Irani.
Anil Kakodkar’s allegations
He resigned as the chairperson of IIT-Mumbai board in March last year alleging intervention from the HRD ministry in the selection of three IIT directors.
