Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigns 'with immediate effect', cites 'personal reasons'

With a one-line resignation letter reading, “Due to certain personal family issues, I hereby tender my resignation with immediate effect,” Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigned from his post on Friday.

Kumar has cited personal reasons behind the move saying that he now wants to spend more time with his family. 

“I confirm resignation due to family issues,” he said while talking to the Indian Express.

Kumar’s resignation comes close on the heels of the resignation of Mukul Rohatgi from the post of the Attorney General of India on June 18.  

Kumar had got an ad-hoc extension of his tenure in June this year.

The resignation letter was received at the office of Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who is presently in the Bahamas to attend an official event and will be back on October 22 said sources.

It is on his return that a call would be taken in this regard the sources added.  

As a senior Supreme Court advocate, Kumar had served as counsel for the Gujarat government as well as amicus curiae in several cases in the Supreme Court before taking over as Solicitor General. 

Among the cases in which he represented the Gujarat government was the infamous Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
