Suffering from kidney ailments since long, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who also suffered a haemorrhagic stroke in June, has turned critical after his health condition further deteriorated. Earlier on Friday, the former Lok Sabha speaker was admitted to a hospital, ANI reported.

The CPI-M veteran is undergoing dialysis and is currently on a ventilator support. Earlier in 2014, the former Lok Sabha speaker suffered a cerebral stroke.

Meanwhile, several Left party leaders have enquired about his health upon reaching the hospital.
A 10-time Lok Sabha MP, Chatterjee was the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009 under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. One of the longest-serving parliamentarians was expelled from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in 2008 after he refused to resign as the speaker of the Lower House as the party withdrew its support over the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Chatterjee is also an illustrious jurist and was a member of Lok Sabha from 1971 to 2009.
