New Delhi:

Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack against Modi government over growing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. During her video address, Sonia Gandhi said that the ruling party has shown utter disregard for people’s voices &chosen to use brute force to suppress dissent.

"In a democracy, people have the right to raise their voice against wrong decisions & policies of the government and register their concerns," Sonia Gandhi said.

Earlier, Sonia Gandhi had led a delegation of opposition leaders to President Ram Nath Kovind to protest the police action against Jamia university students and also against amendments to the Citizenship Act, Gandhi told reporters that the situation was "very serious".

Accusing the Centre government for "shutting down" people's voices and bringing legislations which are not acceptable to them, Sonia Gandhi said that the act is unconstitutional which will discriminate the people of this country.

Joined by leaders of various parties, she also said they were very anguished at the manner in which police dealt with peaceful protesters exercising their democratic rights, and added that police personnel entered women's hostels in Jamia Millia Islamia and "mercilessly" beat up students.
