Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi’s family has alleged that he received threat calls, the police said on Sunday. A case against an unidentified person has been registered by the police, based on a complaint filed by Azmi’s son.
The police said that over the past few days a man allegedly made phone calls to Azmi and threatened to kill him. The man claimed to be a member of a religious outfit.

A senior police official said that a case was registered under IPC sections dealing with “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace” and other relevant provisions on Thursday.
Farhan Azmi, the son of SP leader, in his complaint, which was also addressed to Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar and Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order) Deven Bharti, alleged that the caller threatened to harm him and his family. The police are trying to trace the caller, the official further added.
