State Cabinet clears new name for West Bengal

There will be no state called West Bengal in India very soon. The Bengal state Cabinet has agreed to change the name to Bangla or Bongo. West Bengal senior minister Partha Chatterjee said, “Cabinet decided to change name of West Bengal, will be either Bangla or Bongo. In English it will be Bengal,”.

The Minister also said that a special assembly session will soon be called for advancing the matter.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo seemed to be in favour of the change. “Welcome the name change, but name should not be bongo, that is a musical instrument,” he said.

In 2011, there were discussions to rename the state as PaschimBanga.
