Survival of the smartest: Eight ways to deal with cash crunch

New Delhi:

Tuesday is the 14th day of PM Narendra Modi's demonetisation move, and people are gradually coming to terms with economic upheaval. Unending serpentine queues outside banks, and inoperational ATMs have made customers' life miserable.

With the withdrawal of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 currency notes that once constituted 85% of cash under circulation, here are few hacks that one can adopt to survive in this cash crunch situation.

  • Banking, cheque payments, electronic transfer of funds should be practiced.
  • For bill payments and mobile recharges, there are digital platforms  such as JioMoney, Paytm, Freecharge, Mobikwik, Airtel Money, Vodafone that can be used easily.
  • Direct cash transfer should be preferred and raw cash should be used only on places with no possibilities of card transfer.
  • For commuting, instead of auto book ola, uber, shuttle, meru or other local can services that enables mobile payment options.
  • One can use old defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees and purchases from co-operative stores till tomorrow only  (November 24).
  • For daily grocery shopping instead of spending hard cash use pay by card on delivery via apps of Grofers, BigBasket, Satvacart or Zopnow. Or simply logon to wallets and check which stores and vendors around you are accepting wallet cash.
  • Deposits above Rs 2.5 lakh in 50 days to be scrutinised.
  • One can exchange old defunct notes till Dec 30, 2016.
