A senior BJP leader, Swaraj passed away at AIIMS on Tuesday night. She was 67. AIIMS doctors said she died of a cardiac arrest.

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's demise is an irreparable damage to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the political corridor of India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted on Tuesday, minutes after the senior BJP leader died of cardiac arrest at Delhi AIIMS. She was 67.

"The death of Sushma Swaraj ji is an irreparable loss to BJP and Indian politics. On behalf of all BJP workers, I express my deepest condolences to his family, supporters and well wishers. God bless the departed soul forever. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti," the tweet read.

"Sushma Swaraj ji has left an indelible mark in Indian politics in various forms such as an ardent speaker, an ideal activist, popular public representative and a working minister," the Home Minister said.

"Sushma ji, a seven-time Lok Sabha member and three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, performed various duties as the Chief Minister of Delhi and a member of Union Cabinet. She became the vocal voice of the BJP as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In her form, we have lost a rare and simple leader of Indian politics," Shah wrote in a series of tweets in Hindi.

The BJP stalwart was brought to AIIMS at around 9:30 pm on Tuesday and was immediately taken to the emergency ward. Shortly afterwards, she breathed her last after suffering a heart attack.
