The first ever cleanliness rankings of Swachh Bharat Mission, which was launched in October 2014, have been released. While Karnataka’s Mysuru has topped the list as the cleanest city in India, Jharkhand’s Dhanbad has been ranked the worst.
The top 10 cities include Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot, Gangtok and Greater Mumbai, the 10 worst are Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Patna and Kalyan-Dombivili.
For the findings were done on the basis of marks scored by the cities in the main components of Swachh Bharat Mission. The components include infrastructure, sanitation and transportation among others.
A cleanliness survey was carried out back in 2014 before the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission. All 476 cities with a population of more than one lakh were included in the survey, the results of which were announced in 2015.
"This is the first evidence of churning and keenness on the part of cities to compete with others and improve sanitation and rankings by catching up with well performing cities," an official of the urban development ministry said.
