Tamil Nadu bandh LIVE: DMK, allies call dawn-to-dusk bandh over Tuticorin violence today

To protest the Tuticorin police firing in which 13 people lost their lives, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and other opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have called for a dawn-to-dusk statewide bandh on Friday.

Over the last three days, at least 13 people were killed and 70 others injured after police opened fire at protesters demanding the closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin.

The locals were protesting for over 100 days demanding the closure of the Sterlite Copper unit. They alleged that the plant was polluting groundwater and causing serious health issues.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami had defended the police action, saying “when someone hits you, you naturally tend to defend yourselves. so on such situations, no one acts in a pre-planned manner.”
