Even as her death was announced, the AIADMK MLAs were meeting at the party headquarters to elect a successor to Jayalalithaa amid speculation that loyalist O Panneerselvam will fit into her shoes.
Jayalalithaa was a popular leader who showered the poor with populist programmes and was an iconic figure in state politics for three decades. She had been battling for life for the last 75 days.
On November 19, she was taken out of the intensive care unit to a hospital room, but was moved back on Sunday.
Jayalalithaa, 68, had complained of fever, dehydration and congestion on September 22, after which she had been in intensive care.
She was then put on ventilator and was treated with antibiotics for infection and lung congestion.
For her treatment, the team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals was joined by a team of doctors including UK-based intensivist Dr Richard Beale and doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, comprising pulmonologist Dr G Khilnani, anaesthesiologist Dr Anjan Trikha and cardiologist Dr Nitish Nayak.
